POEM: AKAYO ROCKS MBARARA

* This is a poem by a poet/journalist who attended our December 19, show in Mbarara, Uganda. He tries to paint a picture for those who could have missed the action.

Akayo rocks Mbarara
By Ebenezer T. Bifubyeka,
Poet, Journalist and Author.

What a surprise for a group that started small as a church choir 15 years ago but now not only sings but dances and acts!

The group now excels in doing all these and in staging shows!
It is not only rare but strange; strange but true!

Ululating noise of the excited viewers attracted many to Mbarara Catholic Social Centre;
Viewers at the Akayo’s launch of its 10th audio album on Dec. 19, 2010 were shocked!
Not only shocked of the success of their group’s member’s family but of the entire group.

The excitement goes to maximum after the three-man group of young boys goes on stage,
They sing with no instrument; their voices are the beats that reverberate like a lion’s roar!

Their gospel songs are punctuated by scenes of drama, blended with modern dance styles
And intervals of both wedding and military match-like strokes!
Their creativity is heightened by the vibrant Ruharo Gospel Singers headed by Mr Muhoozi aka AKataama!

Then Akayo comes in again with two main actors splashing in their own kind of English: ‘Ndakuraavinga’ (I love you)!
‘Out-dateda’ for outdated!
It’s a humble but a lovely couple.
Christmas is a few months away; the husband buys clothes and presents for his spouse.
The wife sees all these as nothing so long as there is no gomesi and meat for Christmas!
The husband hasn’t even bought the beans from the market and plants them –
But he orders his wife to prepare ekijamba when those beans mature!
Then the husband switches on to Rukiga;

‘Ndenda oteeke ekijamba ha Christmas! (I want you to prepare bean leaves on Christmas day).’ ‘I won’t do that! Never!’ swears the irate wife.

‘Orakiteeka! (You will prepare it)’ insists the husband.
‘Tindakiteeka, walayi ekijamba tindakiteeka (I won’t; I swear I won’t)!’
The short, small but strong wife jumps and grabs the husband by the neck over ekijamba!

She clobbers the husband until he screams for help! Beads of sweats collect on his brow!
He wipes his sweat with his shirt before the neighbours intervene to save the poor man!
The defeated and ridiculed husband consoles himself that he nearly killed the ka-wife –
Had it not been the intervention of the neighbours!

Then Kacebezi changes his name to Katemere as he carries the offertory basket around!

Such was the fun on a sunny Sunday evening.

INVITATION TO SUPPORT OUR CAUSE

SEEKING YOUR SUPPORT

We members of AKAYO SINGERS with our lamp as Mathew 24:14 greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We package our songs in different languages like Runyankore, Luganda, Swahili, English and Runyarwanda to capture a wider audience.

We also have drama series dubbed TARYANGUZI currently running on TV West.

AKAYO over years has performed at different functions, music concerts, galas, festivals, evangelistic meetings (Efforts), weddings, baptism, graduation, funerals, thanksgiving parties and held several public shows etc. For example we made a total of 66 outings in 2008 and over 70 in 2009 to different parts of the country.

We are musicians without borders the reason why under invitation we perform in Churches of different denominations including SDA, COU and Pentecostals and at functions that don’t conflict with our doctrine.

We have documentary evidence from members of different churches all over the World praising and attesting that our music has saved many souls out there. This is evidenced in the many messages we receive on You Tube, Facebook, e-mail address and on our other Internet platforms.

However, we have done all these single handedly in the last 15 years, without any support apart from all members of the Akayo family putting together their resources and brains.

Now, there is a noble cause why we are writing to you. We are fundraising for a minibus (a 4WD TOYOTA HIANCE approximately Shs 20 million) and we humbly beg for your support.

Through small savings we have managed to record 11 audio albums, 2 video albums, buy a key board and a public address system but we find transport hampering our annual time table and it is the biggest expense on our annual budget. So many Christians from different denominations invite us but at times we fail due to distance or cost of transport.

We appreciate any kind of contribution including prayers. We can receive cash on Western Union, MTN mobile money or direct to our organization’s account in DFCU Mbarara branch.

May the almighty God bless you as you support this noble cause.

Yours Mrs Gertrude Tumusiime
The Chairperson

LETTER FROM NEW YORK

Pastor Fred Kazooba, the Executive Director of Western Uganda Field of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Fort Portal Uganda visited the USA since July 2010 for the Church General Conference. He asked Akayo Singers to give him a carton of our 2 video albums to go along with to share with the brethren in the US. He wrote back on August 27 an encouraging message to the Akayo Director.

Dear Elder, how are you? the DVD especially the first one was very much liked. I used NITAENDA during my sermons and people liked it so much. So I do not have a single one of the first DVD. Akayo Singers are now very well known in New York Spanish Churches. I wish I came with many copies.

Guess what Elder, they were so interested in the music and they went to the Internet and found it on You Tube, they enjoyed it. I am leaving New York on 5th Sept. then arriving Entebbe on 7th. Pray for me and greet everyone over there.

See you when I come.

PASTOR FRED KAZOOBA,
